Weeks or even days of sleepless nights can get very tiring very fast. The truth is both the formula-fed and breastfed babies alike usually wake several times per night for their next meal since their tiny digestive systems process food quickly.
Maybe your mother and grandmother have told you to add a little baby cereal to a bottle of breast milk or formula to give baby something substantial to get her through a longer stretch of the night. Your grandmother gave your mother a bit of cereal, and your mother did the same for you. What will you do?
Safe Baby Cribs
Lactation experts agree that there is no evidence that baby cereal will help infants sleep faster or better at night.
Lactation Consultant Jan Barger is quoted in an article saying, "For one thing, babies are programmed to wake up fairly often during the night, not only to eat, but also to socialize and touch base with their parents. Moreover, your baby won't be able to sleep through the night (defined as a five-hour stretch) until his central nervous system has fully matured; it has almost nothing to do with whether he has a full tummy. Every baby is different - and some will be able to sleep through the night sooner than others."
My daughter's pediatrician and other professionals believe that introducing cereal at an early age can cause various food allergies. They believe these allergies could be avoided by not giving certain foods to a very young infant.
However, the choice is certainly yours to make as a parent. Remember, just because you don't follow the advice of every professional, doctor and relative does not make you a bad parent. Oftentimes, it is impossible to heed everyone's counsel because most words of wisdom differ greatly. Just do what you feel is right for your family. Do your homework, and you will be happy with your decision.
